The expected learning outcomes for the course mainly refer to the level B1 according to CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The student is responsible for checking his/her skills in a self-assessment test before applying for the course.
• Overview of basic English grammar and academic vocabulary
• Exercises and feedback on scientific English
• Listening comprehension exercises/reading and discussion of authentic material to increase the understanding of current issues within technology and natural sciences (e.g. sustainable development, technological breakthroughs).
• Formal individual presentations, including preparations
• Technical descriptions of tools, graphical data and processes
The aim of the course is to give an overview of English grammar and vocabulary to students who need basic support to manage their studies and future careers. The course provides general skills in text structure, scientific English in speech and writing, and English language.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
• understand clearly spoken factual information and the main contents of clear standard speech on subjects within the student's field of study or fields of personal interest
• read texts of some length within specialised technical or scientific fields
• give a formal presentation and communicate what he/she wants without great communication difficulties
• understand the difference between informal and formal language and write short technical descriptions without serious language errors
