HI1021 Mobile Communications
KTH Royal Institute of Technology
Basic knowledge in telecommunications is required.
The course focuses on problems in radio communications and how these problems determine the design of the mobile radio communication systems. A project work is included in the course.
The student shall
· For different GSM systems be able to calculate uplink and downlink frequencies from the absolute radio channel number and vice versa
· From a block diagram explain what happens with the signal in the terminal and the network
· Explain the signaling network extension with SCCP, TCAP and MAP
· Explain the structure of the ISDN number and map that to the operator’s subscriber number MSISDN
· Explain the use of the MSRN number, the TMSI number, the IMEI number and LAI number in the GSM network
· Explain the security functions AUC, SIM and triplets in GSM
· Explain how a call that originates or terminates in a mobile phone from abroad or in the country
· Explain the TT records as the basis for billing and statistics
· Explain the timeslot structure in GSM
· Explain the principles for modern hybrid coding, the differences between FR, EFR and AMR coding, and the use of DTX and power control in the GSM network
· Explain the principles for cell planning in NMT, GSM and UMTS
· Explain wave propagation problems such as Rayleigh fading and frequency selective fading and explain how the problems are solved in GSM and UMTS
· Explain channel coding in different GSM and GPRS channels, use convolutional encoding and Trellis diagrams, punctuated and soft encoding, and hybrid ARQ
· Explain the principle behind interleaving and the importance of frequency hopping in GSM networks for the performance of convolutional coding
· Explain the SMS service in GSM networks
· Explain data communication in GSM and GPRS networks
· Explain the upgrading of GSM to EDGE and EGPRS
