In this course the collected knowledge in urban and regional is applied in a practical setting. The project encompasses the whole planning process for a specific urban area for which contemporary planning issues are addressed and analysed using the range of knowledge, tools and skills acquired during the previous stages of the students' studies. In the project, proposals for action both in terms of the physical environment and the planning process will be developed. A large emphasis is put on the ability to communicate intermediate and final results. Students will have the possibility to pursue a particular line of interest of their choice within the larger topic of the project, thus giving room for specialization.
The overall aim of the course is to develop the students’ abilities to handle complex planning situations where diverse and sometimes conflicting interests are to be treated: social integration, economic growth, ecological concern, cultural values etc. The intention is to foster a critical and creative approach for coming practical and theoretical work in the field of urban planning.
After fulfilling the course requirements, students should be able to:
- carry out a comprehensive analysis of a project area using different qualitative and quantitative tools in order to identify problems, conflicts and needs in the project area.
- develop a plan for the development of the project area considering the long-term interests on local and regional level.
- draw up an implementation plan for the proposed development in which the key actors, who have the capacity to contribute to the implementation of the proposed development, are identified and a funding strategy is set up.
- critically reflect on the implications of the proposed development for differents focus groups in the project area and identify obstacles and impediments that could undermine the proposed development
- prepare an oral and witten presentation using visuals, texts and tools that effectively communicate the core features of the proposed development and implementation plan
